Distinguished and Famous people from Mandurah
π Yaburgurt, also known as George Winjan
Yaburgurt, also known as George Winjan, was a Noongar leader closely associated with Mandurah and its surrounding Country. Councilβs historical account places his birth at Halls Head in 1824 and records the camp where he later lived with his wife Susan. That site links the biography with a particular landscape, including the natural soak remembered in the record. His life unfolded through a period of violent colonial change and increasing settlement. Remembering him as a person with family, Country and a known home is more informative than treating his name only as a label on a modern building or public artwork.
π¨ Emma Blyth
Artist Emma Blyth has built a clear professional connection with Mandurah through her gallery and commissions, including artwork for the cityβs Crab Fest. Trained in graphic design, she established a design business in 1991 and moved into full-time painting in 2001. Her work uses bright colour and broad brushwork to interpret Australian landscapes and wildlife, drawing on sketching trips and travel. The Mandurah gallery also presents work by other artists. Her work combines making art, displaying it and giving community events a visual identity.
